Upcoming tech entrepreneur Ricardo Cruz announced today that his electric vehicle component company MOBILITY VENTURES will list publicly next year. Cruz has not released more details, but there is excitement from certain sectors about having another possible tech company IPO locally.
EXT. CITY STREET – DAY
A concrete jungle of buildings.
An athletic tech entrepreneur RICARDO CRUZ (30s) does his regular morning run with a confident stride.
He finishes with a hard sprint for the final few meters. He stops, bent down gasping for breath. Then he enters his condominium lobby.
INT. RICARDO’S CONDOMINIUM – DAY
After his shower, Ricardo dresses up. He ties his necktie for a power look.
He does some funny impressions in front of his mirror (like John Wayne imitations, etc). Animatedly talks with his pet dog (or cat).
Grabs a quick breakfast and coffee.
On his laptop, a business magazine PDF is open with the headline UPCOMING TECHNOPRENEUR RICARDO CRUZ.

His FB Messenger beeps. CLOSEUP: There is an FB friend request.
MARIE CLAIRE (30s), a confident bespectacled tech professor, and his former classmate back home. Ricardo looks at her Facebook profile photo.
RICARDO CRUZ
(To himself) Hmmm. Marie. Long time.
He clicks. Accepts her friend request.
INTERCUT: DREAMLIKE RICARDO’S POV. MARIE CLAIRE TALKING TO HIM DURING COLLEGE. SUBTLY FLIRTS WITH HIM VISUALLY. NO SOUND.
Ricardo looks at the clock. 7am. He leaves his condominium.
INT. RICARDO’S CAR – DAY
Ricardo drives through scenic spots. His phone rings. He puts it on speaker mode. It is TAKASHI-SAN (40s), his Japanese business client.
RICARDO CRUZ
Takashi-san, how are you? I miss the sake in Tokyo.
TAKASHI-SAN
(V.O.)
Make some time to visit and we'll go back to Ginza. Maybe some more Fugu blowfish? With some prime Sake.
RICARDO CRUZ
Fugu? I’d like to live long enough to do the IPO!
TAKASHI-SAN
(V.O.)
But the Chef knows what he’s doing. No nerve poison most of the time haha.

Uneasy pause. Ricardo goes to his real intent.

My daughter is starting college next year. My wife and I are worried but happy at the same time.

Yes but MOBILITY VENTURES’s version is just as good but cheaper. Your Japanese models are too expensive and too complex.

But expensive for the Asian market. Ours is basic and does the job.

Okay. But I need to protect the battery from overcharging. These new Lithium ion batteries for vehicles are not cheap, you know.
RICARDO CRUZ
Overcharge protection? We can add that feature in.
TAKASHI-SAN
(V.O.)
Also we need a waterproof plastic casing to protect the PCB. For flood protection.
RICARDO CRUZ
Good idea. Sometimes the flooding here reaches even above our heads!
TAKASHI-SAN
(V.O.)
If you make the technical changes I want and cut the price another twenty percent from your quote, maybe.
RICARDO CRUZ
If I do that, I need a purchase order for at least one hundred thousand units. Warranty is for one year.
TAKASHI-SAN
(V.O.)

Your electric buses, jeepneys, tricycles and bikes will be cheaper in the market. You’ll thank me.

Ricardo grins.

Great. I’ll fix the paperwork and email the formal changes to spec to you.

(Pumped) YEAHH!!!
He enters the driveway of a plush building.
INT. RICARDO’S OFFICE - DAY
Ricardo is at his desk. He dials LANDER PRATT (40s), an unpredictable and sometimes rough talking investor, on the speakerphone.
RICARDO CRUZ
Lander! How are you?
LANDER PRATT
(V.O.)
Fine. I shot a hole in one recently at the golf course. That’s good right?
RICARDO CRUZ
You bought drinks for everyone?
LANDER PRATT
(V.O.)
Of course. That’s why I’m broke now. But then I’ll make lots of money with you right?
RICARDO CRUZ
Hopefully.
LANDER PRATT
(V.O.)

RICARDO CRUZ
Nah, no time. Besides I don’t see the point of hitting the ball a distance then walking to pick it up again.

Ricardo skips rope. He finishes with a fast set of jumps. Full alpha male mode.
He does a few pushups up to exhaustion.
INT. RICARDO’S OFFICE - DAY
Inside his high rise we see him making a phone call. On his laptop screen, a STOCK CHART is displayed.
With him on the phone is his technical director RANDY ARNAZ (30s).
RICARDO CRUZ
Randy, have you done the software upgrade and plastic case modifications?
RANDY ARNAZ
(V.O.)
I saw your email. What’s that all about sir? The software code revision, okay. But the injection molding might take a while.
RICARDO CRUZ
We need this order from Takashi-san. He wants those two features before he orders.
RANDY ARNAZ
(V.O.)
I’ll do the software code changes this week. The charging current gets reduced until it stops at full charge.
RICARDO CRUZ
Good.
RANDY ARNAZ
(V.O.)
I’ll also see about the injection molding also with our supplier. Can’t we delay that sir?
RICARDO CRUZ
Takashi-san won’t sign the purchase order without it.
RANDY ARNAZ

I have to be careful with our supplier. They are a bit hard to deal--.
RICARDO CRUZ

We need to use our ARM chip board for this customer. A plastic cover might melt from the heat of our regular board. Plus the ARM chip is a low power chip boss. Less power consumption.

They’ve been running 10,000 hours continuously on several units without any failures. I think they‘re ready.
Ricardo thinks briefly.

Okay we‘ll go with the ARM board for Takashi-san.
RANDY ARNAZ

Once we launch our MOBILITY VENTURES IPO, we’ll have enough capital to build more. And you will be a made man with the shares you have.

Ricardo through scenic places. A few moments pass.
His phone rings. He picks it up, puts it on speaker mode. It is his mother, CLARISSA CRUZ (50s).

Ricardo eats a sandwich while looking at the view.
INTERCUT: RICARDO’S POV. BLACK AND WHITE SCENE IN A PARK BENCH. WE SEE HIS LATE WIFE ANNA FACING AWAY, THEN TURN TOWARDS HIM AND APPROACHES WHILE LAUGHING.
The memory makes him teary eyed. He stops what he is doing, then leaves.
INT. RICARDO’S CONDOMINIUM - NIGHT
Soothing MUSIC plays. Ricardo swishes a brandy in his glass while seated. He sips. Again on his laptop screen, a STOCK TICKER crawls.
He sees Anna’s framed photo on the wall. Then he closes his eyes.
INTERCUT: RICARDO’S POV. BLACK AND WHITE SCENE IN A PARK BENCH. WE SEE HIS LATE WIFE ANNA FACING AWAY, THEN TURN TOWARDS HIM AND APPROACHES WHILE LAUGHING.
The music stops playing. A sad-faced Ricardo lowers his empty drink on his table.
EXT. CITY STREET – DAY
Ricardo does his regular run.
INT. RICARDO’S CAR – DAY
Ricardo drives to work.
INT. RICARDO’S OFFICE – DAY
Ricardo is in his office. Suddenly his phone beeps. The phone shows an SMS: “You have received 1,000,000 Panda crypto coins in your digital wallet.”
He laughingly shakes his head in amusement.
RICARDO CRUZ
(To himself) What a waste of money.
Ricardo then dials DARREN RIVERA (30s), his banker/IPO adviser. On his laptop screen, a STOCK CHART is displayed.
RICARDO CRUZ
Darren. How’s our IPO paperwork?
DARREN RIVERA
(V.O.)
It’s going fine Ricardo. The investor prospectus should be ready by end of this week.
RICARDO CRUZ
Good to hear.
DARREN RIVERA
(V.O.)
We could use a more detailed technical description of your product.
RICARDO CRUZ
I’ll get that from my Technical Director.

Ricardo goes to his desk where his laptop is. On his screen, a STOCK CHART is displayed. Suddenly his Facebook Messenger chat gets a message.
Instead of typing he calls her on his smartphone.
INT. MARIE’S OFFICE – NIGHT
Marie is on her desk typing something on her computer. Her phone rings.
A smile forms. Instinctively she fixes her hair with her hand. She picks up.
INTERCUT RICARDO/MARIE
RICARDO CRUZ
Sorry Marie. Faster if we talk. I have no idea where Susan is these days.
MARIE CLAIRE
Glad you still remember me.
RICARDO CRUZ

I help the brilliant techies here figure out their business plans. Guide them in how to run their startups.

MARIE CLAIRE
Yeah. It’s complicated and fulfilling at the same time.

Good for you. I can’t think of myself going back there.
MARIE CLAIRE

For a man of your talents, there are many interesting technical problems you can solve back here that can be made into tech startups.

For some people it works. Not for me.

Okay. We’re no longer a backwater you know. They’re doing some innovations on Web3 finance on blockchains back here.

Really? That’s interesting. I keep hearing about blockchains.
MARIE CLAIRE
It’s the in thing now. Blockchains. Web3. Crypto. They say blockchains will be the future of finance.

Cool. But I can't see myself being back there working for the Ariaga family, especially Jon. They just own everything back there.
MARIE CLAIRE
Speaking of Jon, we used to date before. I guess after you left.
RICARDO CRUZ
You dated Jon Ariaga? Really. Tell me about that.
MARIE CLAIRE
Hmmph. I’d rather not. (Pause) He's no longer based here. Don't ask me where he is. I've lost touch with him.
RICARDO CRUZ

I guess life’s exciting there. But I like the pace here. You can’t make me move there.

Well it’s too late. The past is the past. Besides you’re there, and I’m here.
RICARDO CRUZ

We can skip that if you don’t want to talk about it.

No it’s okay. I also left because Anna died a few years after we got married. We were still based back there.
MARIE CLAIRE
Sorry to hear that. I guess going back here would remind you of her.
Pause.
RICARDO CRUZ
It’s been a few years. And I know I should move on.
MARIE CLAIRE
Did you have kids with her?
RICARDO CRUZ
No. We never had the chance.
MARIE CLAIRE
Have you moved on?
Long pause.

Maybe. Probably. I think so.
MARIE CLAIRE
But you still love her?
Silence.
MARIE CLAIRE
Sorry I shouldn’t have brought that up. I guess it’s--

--I always will. But she’d probably want me to move on. I moved to the City to try to forget everything. Just wanted to bury myself in work.
Uneasy silence.

MARIE CLAIRE

Ricardo is in his car, in traffic. Suddenly the music on the radio stops.
RADIO ANNOUNCER

The Government announced today that because of the Crisis, a border closure will take effect at midnight tonight. Only necessary travel and work will be allowed from residences and offices within their towns. Non-essential activities should be curtailed. All cross border activities are suspended at this time. All are enjoined to stay only in their localities until the crisis has passed.
He exhales loudly. Shakes his head.
RICARDO CRUZ
(To himself) Damn! That’s not good.
He keeps driving but is annoyed. He dials Francis’s phone.
RICARDO CRUZ
Francis good morning. I’m sure you’ve heard the news.
FRANCIS AREVALO
(V.O.)
I just did.
RICARDO CRUZ
I’m sure this is temporary. It’s just a quick hump then everything will proceed as planned.
FRANCIS AREVALO
(V.O.)
Let’s hope so, Ricardo. Part of that money is for my kid’s college fund.
RICARDO CRUZ
(Pause) Okay. I just called to assure you everything will be okay. Bye.
Ricardo hangs up. He drives a while. Then dials Lander’s phone.

Lander. I’m sure you’ve heard. I’m sure this will be over soon. Just called to reassure you.
LANDER PRATT
(V.O.)
Just keep plugging away Ricardo. I’m counting on you to make that IPO happen. My friends won't be too happy if you screw up.

He hangs up. Ricardo's face appears worried as he continues to drive. A few moments pass by. He continues on his journey.

The phone rings. Ricardo answers it.

I’m afraid I have some bad news. All work on all IPOs are suspended until further notice.

RICARDO CRUZ
I didn’t want to hear that. Any idea when it will restart?
DARREN RIVERA
(V.O.)

RICARDO CRUZ
No inkling at all? We’re losing a lot of money right now. My investors will be pissed. Especially Lander.

Darren hangs up. A few moments later, his technical director calls.

Boss, I'm sorry. The software overcharge revision is done, but a lot of the workers for our supplier have not reported for work, so all work on the plastic injection molding has stopped.
Ricardo tries not to blow his top.

Randy, I know it’s not your fault and I’m trying not to lose it here. But we really need to get this done.
RANDY ARNAZ
(V.O.)
Sorry boss. The paperwork and the plastic mold designs are done. But there’s no one to implement it.
RICARDO CRUZ
Damn! Ask them to find someone. Anyone who can come in to help. Ask them to pay their workers a little extra. Just tell them to get it done!

The clock reads 8am. Ricardo’s running shoes look untouched.
The phone rings. Ricardo answers.
RICARDO CRUZ
Darren?
DARREN RIVERA
(V.O.)
I don’t know how to tell you this.
RICARDO CRUZ

Pause.
DARREN RIVERA
(V.O.)
We’ve been shut down. We’ve all been given severance checks. And--

Ricardo skips rope. Finishes with a fast set of jumps.
He hits a punching bag hard. Lets loose a flurry of hard punches to release the fury in his heart. He yells hard on the last one.

He lays down on the gym floor. Totally exhausted.

Ricardo is on the phone.

Ricardo calms down.

Ricardo hangs up. Suddenly in a blaze of fury, he hurls an object across the room and breaks something.
He drops to the floor. Shouts with all his might.

He breaks down in frustration.

His car phone rings again. Ricardo picks up. It is his business client TAKASHI-SAN.

LANDER PRATT is extremely angry and fires a handgun. Ricardo looks at his chest. A sucking gunshot wound to his heart.
END INTERCUT:
Ricardo awakens in a cold sweat. Sits up on his bed. Scared and disturbed. He opens his bedside drawer. A handgun is revealed. He grabs it. Checks if it is loaded. With the handgun in his right hand, his left hand grabs his right wrist. Then his left hand and palm covers his eyes in dismay.
INT. RICARDO’S CAR – NIGHT
Ricardo is driving. The phone rings. He turns on the speaker.

Hello Francis. How are the wife and--
FRANCIS AREVALO
(V.O.)
--I trust you’ve talked to Lander. I want my money back too.
RICARDO CRUZ
Whoah! You too? But our plans. We can still achieve them. We just need to ride out this storm.

Ricardo SLAMS his desk in disgust then shakes his head. A few moments of anger that slowly dissipates.

He inhales deeply. Exhales. Then dials Darren on speakerphone.

He waits briefly for a reply. There is none. Then he turns off the lamp.

Ricardo tries to do his regular run. He seems lethargic. He stops. Decides to walk back home instead.

The phone rings. He picks up and goes to his window.

(V.O.)
I'm sorry if I lost my cool last time. But what’s the update on my money? I’m fine with two dollars per share. Just make it happen quickly.
Pause.
RICARDO CRUZ
I’ve discussed it with the Bank. Give me a few days to wire it back. That’s not much of a return though.
LANDER PRATT
(V.O.)
(Pause) Never mind. Keep me updated. No need to get the lawyers involved. For now.

Lander hangs up. Annoyed, he almost throws his phone into the wall, but gets his senses back quickly.
He looks at Anna’s photo. No memory of her comes back.

Ricardo picks up the brandy bottle, but changes his mind and decides not to drink.
He quietly stares at the City skyline. He checks his Facebook messages. His message to Marie has been read but there is no reply.
He dials her on Facebook Messenger.

Ricardo glances at his various photos. It’s so quiet that the sound of the clock ticking is heard. He appears to be trying to make a major decision. He finally TURNS OFF the STOCK CHART app on his screen.
He dials the phone.

Hello. Yes?
Pause. Ricardo is unsure. His face reflects a mix of fear and disappointment.

Better than me just buying your shares at two dollars per share. As much as I want it, an IPO doesn’t look doable.

He sits at his desk. A brown envelope is slipped under his door. He approaches and picks it up. Inside are the documents that Darren prepared for the equity sale.

Ricardo is driving. The speakerphone is on.

Did you get the softcopy? We’re proposing six dollars per share. That’s the best valuation we can get given the circumstances.

I just wish it were more.

Lander already signed off on it. I need your approval before I send it to Terry.

Ricardo waits anxiously. He looks at his running shoes. He decides to go for a run. So he laces up.

Ricardo goes for a run. This time a relaxed run. He looks around and takes his time to enjoy the sights he normally doesn’t pay attention to.
INT. RICARDO’S CONDOMINIUM - DAY
He fidgets. Sits at his sofa, then goes to his window. Finally the phone rings.

Terry. How are things going?
TERRY FABER
(V.O.)
Let’s cut to the chase. I think your proposal of six dollars per share is still a bit high.
RICARDO CRUZ
It’s already low.
TERRY FABER
(V.O.)
I can walk away with no regrets.
RICARDO CRUZ
We were planning twenty dollars a share for the IPO. So that’s discounted. But what’s your proposal?
TERRY FABER
(V.O.)
Five dollars per share is more acceptable to me. That’s already a premium given the situation now.
Ricardo thinks.

I think I can get my investors to go with that. Do we have a deal at five dollars per share then?
Terry pauses.
TERRY FABER

Yes at five. My lawyer will handle the details with Darren then we can sign off on the paperwork. How’s that?
Ricardo tries to stifle a leap and shout.

Tentatively I think we have a deal Terry. I’ll just clear it with my investors. It’s a good business.
TERRY FABER
(V.O.)
It is. I’ll wait for your Board decision. Let’s talk soon.

They both hang up. Ricardo immediately sends an SMS (or PM) to both Francis and Lander, and the messages appear to float as text messages onscreen:
“TERRY AGREED TO FIVE DOLLARS PER SHARE. I SUGGEST WE TAKE IT ELSE WE COULD LOSE THE DEAL. PLEASE APPROVE ASAP.”
After a few seconds, Francis replies:
“SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! GOOD JOB!”
But Lander takes his time. Then he finally replies.
“FIVE IS NOT OK WITH ME. HOLD OFFER AT SIX DOLLARS PER SHARE.”
Ricardo’s face reddens. He angrily dials Lander’s phone.

Ricardo hangs up. He stands up, then waits until he regains his composure. He sends an SMS to Terry seen onscreen.

A few moments later, seen onscreen:
TERRY FABER (SMS): “Okay. Have your paperwork ready for the signing. I can’t talk now, but let’s talk again soon.”
Ricardo finally lets out his war cry that’s both a pent up frustration release and victory cry.

Ricardo drives back to his favourite park/lakeside/seaside. But before he disembarks, he has a change of heart.

Ricardo does push ups. He then looks at the punching bag. Does a few punches, but then stops and just stares at it, as if he has lost the drive to workout. He gets his towel, drinks water from his bottle, and leaves.
INT. MARIE’S HOUSE – NIGHT
Marie dials Ricardo. He picks up.
MARIE CLAIRE
(Excited) Ricardo. Guess what? The cryptocurrency fintech startup I told you about? They briefed us on their plans. Stablecoins. Real world assets. The future of finance, they say, will all be on blockchains. And they’re doing it here in our hometown!

Haha. (Pause) If your problem is how to raise capital, the crypto and Web3 blockchain startups over here raise funding like they’re just picking up sand from the beach!

No details are available as to why Cruz, a fast rising entrepreneur, suddenly sold his entire stake. It is possible that the sudden economic shutdown and turbulence in the equities market had something to do with it.
EXT. MARIE’S HOUSE - DAY
Someone‘s hand rings Marie‘s doorbell. Her door opens. Marie appears. Her face suddenly beams in a wide smile. Ricardo approaches and hugs her tight.

Also, it is rumored that Jon Ariaga of the famous Ariaga clan is returning back home to set up the local manufacturing branch of a company that hometown tech entrepreneur Ricardo Cruz had originally set up. It would be interesting to see how this plays out locally between these two rival personalities.
