EXT. WASHINGTON, DC - ESTABLISHING
A grand sweep of the nation’s capital in all its glory. Every city has a currency, this one has power. As we, begin a FAST PUSH across the POTOMAC RIVER --
A MAN’S VOICE They come from everywhere.
EXT. KALORAMA, NW - NIGHT
A stately and historic neighborhood. Right off Embassy Row, where the best addresses in DC are found. To the Power Elite, it’s home.
A MAN’S VOICE The ordinary people of Main Street USA.
EXT. TAFT BRIDGE - NIGHT
Where an AUDI A6 blazes through Connecticut Avenue onto the bridge stretching over Rock Creek Park.
A MAN’S VOICE Men and women who have answered the call...
INT. AUDI A6 - TRAVELING
With the CAPITOL BUILDING in the b.g, WALTER HOLLAND (50, U.S. Senator) drives. He knows how to charm and makes a great living at it.
SENATOR HOLLAND The call to lead.
He flashes a winning smile.
SENATOR HOLLAND (CONT'D) That’s Washington, dear.
A PRETTY YOUNG INTERN rises into frame from the passenger side. Starry-eyed and idealistic.
INTERN You know, you’re the reason I got involved in politics. I’m really glad to be working for you, Senator.
SENATOR HOLLAND Thanks.
He looks down at his lap.
SENATOR HOLLAND (CONT'D) (polite) Could you finish here?
INTERN Sure.
She smiles, lifts her hair back and leans over. His phone goes off. He checks the number.
SENATOR HOLLAND I have to take this call. It’s my wife.
Senator Holland answers his phone. Before, realizing that he’s swerved into the other lane. An ONCOMING CAR comes into view -- HORNS BLOW! He quickly spins the wheel.
HARD CUT:
EXT. ROCK CREEK PARK - CONTINUOUS
The car rockets off the bridge into the air and smashes to the ground. Catches fire. Then BURSTS into a FIREBALL.
Chyron: Three Months Later
EXT. WASHINGTON, DC - DAY
The Capitol sits under a sunrise as the morning backdrop. And the NEWS FEEDS are off and running...
CUT TO:
QUICK SERIES OF SHOTS
- AFTER HOLLAND TRAGEDY, GOV. PICKS STANFORD LAW PROF. ROGER DUNCAN TO FILL EMPTY SENATE SEAT.
- SHOCKER! SENATE’S NEXT ROCK STAR.
- IT’S OFFICIAL! MR. DUNCAN GOES TO WASHINGTON.
GRAHAM COOK (PRE-LAP) Voters are fed up with Washington. They’re asking, Roger Duncan? So, what?
INT. CABLE NEWS STUDIO - DAY
Under bright lights, CIRCLE AROUND TO -- SENATOR ROGER DUNCAN (late 30s) in a sharp suit. This guy never stopped wanting to make a difference.
PRODUCTION ASSISTANT This way Mr. Senator.
A pretty boy PRODUCTION ASSISTANT with a clipboard ushers him past the TV CREW. It’s all go-go-go.
GRAHAM COOK (O.S.) What’s this do-gooder gonna do for us?
MONITOR POV -- reveal the man behind that voice. Hardliner cable-TV host GRAHAM COOK (40) at the news chair. He’s brazen, ballsy and goes for the jugular.
GRAHAM Senator, the press loves you. Accomplished author, grass roots activist from a political dynasty, Stanford Law professor. (smug) It’s all voter gold.
Roger handles his candor as best he can.
ROGER Graham, I’m a lot of the things you mentioned but politician hasn’t been one of them. I’ve been in- touch with people. What they need. The struggles of their daily lives. That’s why I accepted the Governor’s offer to come to Washington.
INT. UNION STATION - ESTABLISHING
DC’s busy central hub swarms with commuters funneling into the District.
INT. PUBLIC REST ROOM - SAME
At the mirror, NICK TORRES (16), finishes brushing his teeth. Dark hair, handsome. Self-satisfied and enigmatic. Every motion purposeful and practiced.
He zips his toiletry bag. Checks his teeth. Smiles. This is no ordinary teenager, as we will later find out.
INT. UNION STATION - DAY
Where Nick continues through the grand colonnaded halls, taking in his new destination. Until, he’s drawn towards --
QUICK TO:
HUDSON NEWS - METRO CORRIDOR
For a town full of information junkies, this is the first stop off the platform. We haven’t gone completely paperless yet. There’s a flat screen overhead from which we hear Graham Cook’s booming voice addressing his viewers.
GRAHAM (ON SCREEN) And there you have it. Senator Duncan has hit the political landscape like an earthquake. Next big thing or more of the same?
Nick peruses the periodicals, notices a copy of The New Republic. Senator Duncan is on the cover under a header Next Big Thing?
HADLEY (O.S.) They can’t stop talking about the guy.
Nearby is HADLEY (16). Nick notices him. Kindle, check. Navy blazer, check. Wears these black framed Oliver Peoples glasses.
HADLEY (CONT'D) (isn’t it obvious?) Duncan.
Nick nods.
NICK Right.
He’s a kid who’s comfortable in his own skin which Nick can’t help but admire. They both lock on the television as we HEAR -
AN AUTHORITATIVE VOICE The Cook Hour. Get ready or get...
RAPID FIRE graphics fill the screen: COOKED. Nick pops an eyebrow.
NICK What’s with that guy?
HADLEY He has no filter. Duncan on the other hand? He’s a breath of fresh air and already a household name. But they all go from outsider to insider eventually.
Hadley extends his hand before Nick can respond.
HADLEY (CONT'D) I’m Hadley. Hadley Cook.
Nick subtly drifts his eyes back at the screen. Hadley nods amused by the connection.
HADLEY (CONT'D) Yep. He’s my Dad. (then) You look familiar. Did we play each other in lacrosse?
NICK I’m not from around here.
Hadley shrugs.
HADLEY Well, hope ya like D.C.
Hadley curiously watches him go. On the screen behind him, TWO ANCHORS share a breaking news report.
ANCHOR Still no leads in the case of missing whistleblower Adam Frost, a story that continues to rattle politics...
A photo of a suited YOUNG PROFESSIONAL appears on the program. Hadley notices.
FLASH CUT:
EXT. WASHINGTON, DC - DAY
The center of the political world. The CAMERA TRACKS -- a YELLOW CAB navigating through the District. Georgetown’s chic shops. K-Street power brokers. Hipsters in Adams-Morgan. And into DuPont Circle as we return to:
EXT. KALORAMA - CUL DE SAC - DAY
Away from the diplomatic embassies and luxury coops is an enclave of distinguished family homes. The neighborhood is a world of it’s own within DC where discretion is everything. Home to ambassadors, politicians, philanthropists and prominent journalists.
It’s the political elite’s answer to Wisteria Lane but here the housewives (and husbands) are adept at making power plays on both sides of the aisles.
NPR HOST (O.S.) ...Duncan is a value-added member of Congress. People feel like he’s one of us.
INT. LEXUS SUV - TRAVELING
At the wheel, an elegant WOMAN steers into the cul de sac. Driving faster than she should. Tuned to NPR. Pressed juice in cup holder. Eyes hidden in mirrored-lensed sunglasses.
NPR GUEST Let’s not kid ourselves. The guy grew up in privilege.
NPR HOST So did JFK. What’s your point?
KAT SPENCER-DUNCAN (late 30s) turns the radio off. DC born and bred from a long line of Brahmins. Put together like immaculate perfection. An Ivy-educated, blue blood beauty and an unstoppable Type-A. She doesn’t apologize for any of it.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - ESTABLISHING
The SUV pulls to the top of a circular motor court which unfolds before a grand Georgian Revival. Kat throws the car into park and takes a fast stride from the driver side.
KAT Damn it.
She slides her sunglasses up and notices a parked MINI- COOPER blocking the driveway.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTRAL HALL - DAY
Kat hustles into this regal home, glued to her phone. Spacious and polished like the image Kat wants to project.
KAT (calls out) Tavis?!
She looks up the spiral stairs.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - VERANDA - CONTINUOUS
Kat pulls open the double doors and bounds outside to a full house. An expansive WHITE TENT is being installed by a WORK CREW. There are CATERERS setting up tables by a garden. It’s a great entertaining space and an even greater asset to a woman vying for supremacy among DC’s social set.
KAT What are you doing?
Not pleased to find a bikini-clad TAVIS DUNCAN (16) on her stomach over a preppy pink towel. Legs crossed upwards beside a sparkling pool. Beautiful and intelligent.
TAVIS Relaxing.
KAT Do you know what happens to people who relax?
Tavis waits for it.
KAT (CONT'D) They end up on welfare.
She sits up.
TAVIS What do you want from me? Philanthropy. Summer session at Georgetown. Internship at the State Department. All week, every week. I needed to kick back.
KAT It’s called investing in your future.
TAVIS My student profile is already air- tight and highly marketable to the Ivies. I slayed this summer.
Tavis heads towards the house with Kat.
KAT Do me a favor, don’t talk like a teenager around me.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTER HALL
They continue upstairs. As Kat grows more annoyed.
KAT I have all of Washington coming tonight. You’re representing this family. We need to put our best foot forward, we’re the new kids in the neighborhood. I know how these people work.
Tavis smirks.
TAVIS I’m always on my best behavior.
Suddenly, Kat pulls back the curtains on the landing and looks out the window.
KAT What’s going on next door?
REVEAL -- TWO FEDERAL AGENTS are seizing file boxes from the NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE into an unmarked government car.
TAVIS The circus is in town. It’s been going on all morning.
KAT I thought that was over.
TAVIS Your guess is as good as mine.
Kat’s interest is piqued.
KAT Well, being back in my hometown. One thing that always stays the same. It’s never a dull moment around here.
Tavis’ eyes widen in agreement. Touché.
EXT. FROST HOME - ESTABLISHING
Several yards away, overgrown with ivy and foliage stands the FROST HOME. The mailbox hasn’t been checked in days and from the looks of it no one has left the house either.
INT. FROST HOME - SECOND FLOOR - SAME
The house is dark. NATALIE FROST (16), stares out the window in isolation. Eyes intense and focused. Her gaze meets Tavis. Until finally, Natalie snaps the blinds shut.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - UPSTAIRS - CONTINUOUS
Kat and Tavis move down the hallway.
KAT Oh and remember, Dad’s godson Nick is coming for the weekend.
Tavis nods weirdly.
TAVIS Of course, his beloved godson that no one’s ever met or knew existed. What am I supposed to do? Take him to the Smithsonian?
Kat smiles at her daughter.
KAT Just make an effort. His family was important to Dad. It’ll only be a couple days.
TAVIS Again, zero background on the Torres family but I’ll keep playing along.
Kat stops, makes it snappy.
KAT When your grandfather was busy as the governor of California, Dad spent a lot of time in Sonoma where he grew up. This big Mexican- American family ran the vineyard. They helped raise your Dad, you could say.
Tavis looks at her mother funny.
TAVIS I never knew that...
KAT Well, now you know. So, get changed and get moving.
EXT. CAPITOL HILL - DAY
SWEEPING OVERHEAD SHOTS -- The CAPITOL BUILDING. The WASHINGTON MONUMENT. The NATIONAL MALL. At every angle is an assembly of government workers, junior staffers on the make and stars of the political eminence. And, it can only mean one thing... congress is back in session.
INT. SECURITY STATION - MOMENTS LATER
Roger flashes his badge at a security checkpoint -- past the guards and through a metal detector.
EXT. STEPS OF THE CAPITOL - CONTINUOUS
Senator Duncan walks up the grand steps with his STAFF passing swarms of journalists and tourists. They continue through the CAPITOL ROTUNDA -- across the HALL OF STATUES and into the long corridors of power.
INT. DIRKSEN SENATE OFFICE BUILDING - MOMENTS LATER
A no-frills interim office in the crowded basement. Swamped in wall to wall activity. When Roger enters, everyone stops what they are doing and claps.
His chief-of-staff, HANNAH (20s) talks over them. She’s Berkeley brainy and as hyper-achieving as they come.
HANNAH Because of our new Senator, The Quality Education for All bill is closer to being passed.
They CHEER and APPLAUD. The room is infatuated and Roger loves them back.
ROGER Thank you, Hannah and for trouble shooting my Senate-issued phone earlier. That pre-loaded app sends off an alert when it’s voting time. It’s very useful.
The STAFF laughs.
ROGER (CONT'D) You know, I look at all of you and see my teammates. Friends and partners who share my hopes for this country. We are in this fight together...
EXT. CAPITOL HILL - DAY
Again we find, NICK TORRES arriving out from the Metro. He looks around in awe of his surroundings and begins to cross the street towards the Capitol Building.
INT. SENATOR DUNCAN’S OFFICE - LATER
Roger is at his desk. There are framed PHOTOGRAPHS of him standing with a constellation of Washington stars (High- Ranking Generals, Justices, Presidents, etc.)
STAFFER (O.S.) You have a visitor, Mr. Senator.
The speakerphone announces on his desk.
ROGER Send him on in.
Roger rises from behind his desk. Nick is guided inside. The STAFFER smiles and closes the door behind them.
ROGER (CONT'D) Nicholas, I’ve been expecting you.
He comes from around the desk to meet Nick. They shake. Nick gives him a polite smile, eyes look straight into his.
NICK Thank you for having me, Mr. Senator.
ROGER Of course. Call me Roger. Please, have a seat.
Roger holds his hands up.
ROGER (CONT'D) My temporary office assignment. All about seniority around here.
Nick looks around, still impressed. They sit. Face-to-face.
ROGER (CONT'D) A lot like high school you could say. They take your attendance. There’s cliques. But politics is a whole new breed today. Our every move is tracked. We’re very much under the microscope like never before.
Roger is intrigued by this kid. Nick seems to hold onto his every word. He straightens before he speaks, becoming more confident in his words.
NICK There’s no doubt you’ll clinch the nomination after this interim. You’ve been inspirational to a lot of voters. They believe in you.
Roger smiles.
ROGER Thanks. You know, it’s great to finally meet you. I’m glad you wanted to visit Washington. Your family has always been a big part of my life.
Nick’s expression changes. A sparkle in his eye.
NICK But that was a long time ago.
ROGER Well, yes. A whole ‘nother incarnation, you could say. (MORE)
ROGER (CONT'D) I love my job but trust me, I never expected to be in politics, like my father.
NICK (after a beat) Of course you did. Everything you’ve done. It’s all led up to this moment.
Roger smiles uncomfortable. When Nick speaks, every word is purposeful. Much like Roger, he has the gift.
NICK (CONT'D) They think you’re different. I know you’re different. I know the things they don’t know about you. What you don’t tell your family. I know the real you, Senator.
OFF ROGER -- staring back at Nick and holding a broad smile. A flicker of panic in his eyes. As if his world is about to go spinning off its axis.
EXT. KALORAMA - CUL DE SAC - DAY
Nick gets out of a TAXI CAB and observes the neighborhood. Despite the implications of his meeting, he’s surprisingly at ease in this new setting.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - DAY
Nick checks the address on his phone and eyes up the walkway. Tavis appears from the side of the house. He sees her.
TAVIS Nick, right?
She lights up. Nick smiles.
NICK Hey.
TAVIS Tavis. I’m Roger’s daughter. I’ve heard a lot about you.
Tavis comes over with a cheery face and gives him a hug.
NICK Really?
TAVIS Yeah, of course.
She nods, smiles warmly. He regards the throngs of CATERER STAFF unloading from a truck in the driveway.
NICK This a bad time?
She waves him off.
TAVIS No, it’s fine. That’s all for my Dad. His big intro to the neighborhood.
Tavis looks down at his suitcase.
TAVIS (CONT'D) Anyway. Come on, I’ll show you the guest room.
INT. DIRKSEN SENATE OFFICE BUILDING - DAY
Kat heels down the halls of marble. Even here, she’s in her element and confident with every step.
INT. SENATOR DUNCAN’S OFFICE - DAY
Kat leans across the desk and kisses Roger. He smiles.
KAT Ready for tonight? You’re going to meet every Washingtonian that matters in the comfort of our own new home.
ROGER Sometimes I feel like you’d be happier behind this desk.
KAT We’re a partnership, Roger. My father was a kingmaker in this town. It’s in my blood. But this is what you want. You just needed the right person to push you.
She smiles, sits down in a chair and crosses her legs in front of him. There are now a set of KLIEG LIGHTS in position for a publicity shoot.
ROGER Maybe, I’m not the right guy for this after all.
KAT That’s a DC lie. You’re lying and we both know it. What is it?
ROGER Nick came by the office.
KAT Okay?
ROGER Meeting him got me thinking about where I was back then in Sonoma.
Kat rolls her eyes.
KAT Oh, god. Leave the existential crises in California, Roger. We can’t have any setbacks. We’ve worked too hard.
She pauses.
KAT (CONT'D) This is where we always needed to be and now we’re finally here. Back in my element.
ROGER I know, Kat.
Kat stands.
KAT Good. And that photographer for the GQ profile waiting outside? You know what they’re buying? You. So just remember...
She kisses him on the cheek and whispers.
KAT (CONT'D) Smile.
Roger, realizing the full extent of what he’s signed up for.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - GUEST ROOM - DAY
Nick has a well-packed suitcase on the bed. He looks up and sees the door to the MASTER BEDROOM open.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - MASTER BEDROOM & BATH - DAY
Nick goes inside, his eyes exploring everything. Tasteful furnishings. In the bathroom, there is a badger brush. Aftershave. Shaving Cream. A razor.
He sees a picture frame on the wall. A photograph of Roger and Kat on each side of Tavis as a kid. Something about it is bitter sweet for him.
TAVIS There you are.
Nick snaps out of it.
NICK Realized I left my tooth brush at the train station.
TAVIS We’ve got extras in that ceramic jar. Anything you need just grab.
He follows her out through the bedroom.
NICK Thanks.
TAVIS My Mom grew up here. My grandmother moved out for us and into a condo nearby. Houses around here are always changing hands. This one has a lot of history.
She eyes the place over with fondness.
NICK That’s pretty nice of your grandma.
TAVIS Strategic, more like it. The social and political networking overlap. Madge Spencer, the Grand Doyenne of Washington needed to pass her hosting title on to my Mom.
NICK Keep it in the family?
Tavis rolls her eyes, smiles.
TAVIS Exactly.
She guides Nick outside onto an open terrace, which provides a view into another neighbor’s property as a DERRINGER CYCLE motors up a driveway curling behind the house.
TAVIS (CONT'D) I should introduce you to our neighbor.
EXT. COOK HOME - MOMENTS LATER
Directly across the street is an equally impressive Federal- style home. Set back from the street. Tucked away by the shady trees.
TAVIS Had, when did ya get back?
Tavis and Nick emerge from the gate. Hadley removes his helmet, turns to face them.
NICK This morning.
TAVIS Hadley convinced the neighbors to sponsor him on a cycling tour of Europe for the summer.
HADLEY All for charity. Here’s a souvenir.
He hands her a small vintage tin. She smiles.
TAVIS How thoughtful. This is Nick.
HADLEY Union Station.
TAVIS (confused) You’ve met?
NICK I took the train from the airport.
HADLEY Guess we float in the same orbit.
NICK Looks that way.
HADLEY And what’s the connection?
TAVIS My Dad grew up with Nick’s family in Sonoma.
HADLEY Gotcha. Well, we’ll take you under our wing while you’re here.
NICK I’m not staying long. Probably headed back tomorrow.
Tavis gives him a curious glance.
TAVIS To California? You just got here.
NICK I sorta left without telling anyone. Might not have been the most level headed course of action.
Tavis is struck.
HADLEY (intrigued) A cross country runaway?
NICK Had a falling out with my family. Realized they’ve been lying to me about a few things.
Hadley nods amused.
HADLEY Parents lying? You’re in good company then.
Hadley and Tavis exchange smiles.
TAVIS Let us show you around D.C. Call your family. (MORE)
TAVIS (CONT'D) Whatever happened, sure you can all get past it. We’ll make your stay worth it. Promise.
Nick shrugs, glances around the neighborhood.
NICK Sure why not?
He smiles. Tavis claps her hands together.
TAVIS Good. I’m excited.
Hadley gives him a knowing look.
HADLEY You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into...
He flashes a wry grin.
INT. FROST HOME - BASEMENT - LATER
CLOSE ON a PLASTER WALL. Suddenly, a sledgehammer comes down, hard and blows a hole through it. REVERSE ON Natalie holding the sledgehammer. She keeps swinging, knocking the wall into a million little pieces --
-- Uncovering a hidden door. Natalie clears the way to its handle and unlocks the door knob.
On the other side is a sealed-off room where a half dozen file boxes sit stacked against the wall.
I.E. FROST HOME - GARAGE - CONTINUOUS
Natalie picks a bottle of lighter fluid off a tool bench.
HADLEY (O.S.) Feels like I haven’t seen you in a full calendar year.
Natalie darkens.
NATALIE What part of don’t bother coming by didn’t you understand?
Hadley stands there in the driveway. She looks at him with indifference. The sun sets behind him.
HADLEY My trip was good, Nat. Thanks for asking.
NATALIE Don’t you have somewhere to be?
HADLEY They’ll find him. You don’t have to shut yourself off from people.
Natalie stares defiantly back at Hadley.
NATALIE People like you?
HADLEY I can help.
NATALIE I don’t trust you. Never have.
She closes the garage door. Opens a lit furnace. Then tosses a handful of files inside. They catch fire. Flames reflecting in her eyes.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - KITCHEN - LATER
Nick enters the room where Kat glances up from her phone. She gives Nick a warm smile.
KAT Nicholas, the man of the hour. I’m Kat. So nice to meet you.
Kat approaches him and extends her hand. He smiles back, a little unsure of himself in this moment. Kat senses it like a predator but keeps up appearances.
NICK Thanks for having me on such short notice.
KAT Our pleasure. I want to know more about you. Frankly, I was surprised you were even in touch with Roger.
She studies Nick. Something about him. Can’t put her finger on it.
NICK I wasn’t. Really.
KAT I’m glad you reached out. You said in your e-mail that you plan on attending the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown for college?
NICK I hope to.
KAT That’s wonderful. The Provost will be a guest tonight. I’ll have to introduce you.
NICK That’d be great, thanks. But I didn’t exactly come prepared for a fancy party.
Kat looks him over.
KAT Maybe Hadley across the street can help us improvise?
INT. COOK HOME - HADLEY’S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Everything is in order. No clutter. There’s an old ladder against the wall loaded with books. Hadley places three different suits on the bed.
HADLEY Borrow whatever you want.
He’s got style. Nick picks one up.
NICK Haven’t worn a suit since I was a kid but this looks good.
HADLEY So, what’s your take on Tavis?
Nick becomes uneasy.
NICK She’s fine.
HADLEY I know. But isn’t as sweet as she would have you believe. If you know what I mean.
Hadley smiles and goes to his drawer.
HADLEY (CONT'D) She’d be a nice pull, yeah?
Nick gives him an agreeable look. Hadley sits down next to his bed stand. Starts crushing up beads of ADDERALL with a paper weight.
NICK Don’t see how that would work, I’m just visiting.
Hadley gives him a look.
HADLEY Just if you wanted to have some fun while you’re here. She’s into you, I can tell.
Hadley shrugs, moves on.
HADLEY (CONT'D) Here something to cleanse the palette. Homework medicine. Look like you need it. Gotta relax, man. Loosen up.
Presents the crushed up Adderall on a coin tray. Nick passes.
NICK I’m good.
HADLEY Suit yourself.
Hadley leans down and inhales, lifts his head back. Clears his nostrils.
HADLEY (CONT'D) Much better.
Nick holds the suit and motions to go.
NICK I better get back.
INT. COOK HOME - SECOND FLOOR - CONTINUOUS
They head for the stairs. Right when Hadley’s stunningly beautiful and statuesque mother FELICIA COOK (40s) comes down the hallway in a gown. She has a drink in her hand.
FELICIA Hadley. Who’s this?
Felicia eyes Nick curiously. She smiles. The kid’s a catch.
HADLEY Nick. He’s visiting the Duncans.
Felicia lights up.
FELICIA Oh, that’s exciting. Are you a relative?
Nick smiles, follows after Hadley.
NICK No, ma’m.
FELICIA Well, hope you have an eventful visit, Nick.
Nick nods.
NICK Thanks.
Hadley nods. They kick down the stairs.
HADLEY (on the sly) My mom can be a liability. Plan on making an early exit with us tonight.
NICK Alright, thanks for the suit I’ll bring it back tomorrow.
HADLEY Don’t mention it.
Hadley gives him a slight salute. While Felicia observes Nick’s exit from atop the staircase.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - TAVIS’ BEDROOM
Tavis fastens a string of pearls to her neck. The lights from the party stream in as night falls. She unwraps the souvenir from Hadley. Inside is a tightly wound joint.
ROGER Tavis, you got a sec?
She fumbles and closes the lid. Door opens a crack. Roger awaits her from behind it.
INT. HALLWAY - INTERCUT
From the guest room, Nick sees Roger going into Tavis’ room.
INT. TAVIS’ BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Roger smiles at his daughter.
TAVIS Dad, you’re home early.
ROGER Can’t work vampire hours every night. I wanted to see how you were doing. Is this working for you?
TAVIS Sure. It’s all the same. Wherever I go I’m going to be Senator Roger Duncan’s daughter. I’m fine with that. Why?
ROGER I don’t know. Do I not make enough time for you anymore?
TAVIS Debatable. Don’t worry about it. Dad, I know you’re trying to do something important. Most people can’t say that. I’m proud of you.
Roger seems pleased, albeit still perplexed about the implications of his meeting with Nick.
ROGER Thanks. What do you think of Nick?
TAVIS He’s a tough nut to crack but I like him.
ROGER Good.
REVERSE TO:
Off Nick in the other room, feeling conflicted.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - GUEST ROOM - MINUTES LATER
Nick is in a sharp suit. The cuff links are another story. Roger steps into the room. As Nick turns back and sees him. There is an awkward moment.
NICK You have a nice home.
ROGER My mother-in-law’s place. But I think so too.
NICK To be honest, you’ve got everything. A wife and daughter who think you’re amazing. It’s quite a charmed life you lead.
He gives him a hard stare.
ROGER I’m not infallible, Nick. I know that.
Roger goes over to him, notices he’s having a hard time with the cuff links.
ROGER (CONT'D) Here. Let me help you.
NICK I got it.
Roger takes the cuff links and secures them into place on Nick’s sleeve.
ROGER Listen, it doesn’t have to be this way, Nick. You want to expose me? Is that it?
Nick looks away.
NICK You’ve hurt people. Actions have consequences.
On Roger, a firm look. Reestablishing himself as the adult --
ROGER I want you to enjoy yourself tonight. I’d like us to get to know each other. But you’re going about this the wrong way.
Nick glances up.
NICK Get to know you? Does anyone get to know the real you? You know what you did. And every secret has an expiration date...
Their eyes meet, like all bets are off.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - NIGHT
A motorcade of luxury cars meet the VALETS outside, along with Secret Service security detail standing guard.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTER HALL - NIGHT
Everything beautiful. Nothing out of place. The WHITE TIE GALA is swimming with Washingtonians (boldface names, politicians, socialites and dignitaries).
TUXEDOS and GOWNS at every angle. GUESTS mingling as the champagne flows. Nick observes the room, hands in his pockets at a table. He’s never attended an event quite like this. Tavis steps up next to him.
TAVIS You’re doing that notice how I’m not trying to be noticed thing.
Nick smiles, gives her an odd look.
NICK No, I’m not.
TAVIS I’m just messing with you... Check out my Mom, she has to shake the hand of everyone in this room. It’s like she’s running for office.
At the center of it all are the all-smiling Kat and Roger, like newly installed pillars of DC society.
The empress radiates in a black dress and pearl necklace. While Roger keeps smiling and pumping hands through the trenches of Washington society. Kat leans over to Roger.
KAT (on the sly) Make time for Van Blargan, tonight.
ROGER Oh?
She indicates an ELDER STATESMAN popping MOCHI BALLS into his mouth from a table in the corner. This small town-type feeling lost among the polished intelligentsia.
KAT Hearing he’ll head the Senate Subcommittee on Education.
Roger follows her gaze.
ROGER I’m on it, babe.
KAT Friendly warning. His breath smells like he ate a dead bird. No spacial coordination. He’s a close talker.
They hold back laughs. She smiles, passes through the guests like the consummate insider and sees, GRAHAM and FELICIA enter. Both take in the party. Reserved, cool.
GRAHAM (to Felicia) The white knight and his warrior queen sure are getting popular.
He picks up a glass of DUNCAN RED WINE from a banquet table and sips. His eyes take inventory of the crowd.
FELICIA Graham, if it can stain your shirt, it can stain your teeth and show up on camera.
She points. Graham returns the wine glass to its place. She picks off two champagne flutes from a passing WAITRESS, hands one to him. He locks on Roger, embittered.
GRAHAM Look at him. Zero political experience. It’s mind boggling.
Felicia smirks, runs her hand along his shoulder.
FELICIA Let’s be real. Duncan’s a prop for the Spencers and everybody knows.
Graham scoffs at this.
GRAHAM The Spencers? All I hear with that name is the echoes of a vanished power in this city.
FELICIA That’s very poetic. But let’s face it, the Spencers still have a bite.
Kat parts the crowd, like a gale force and heads towards them. Everyone instantly turns on the charm. Cheek kissing.
KAT Graham.
Her eyes go wide.
KAT (CONT'D) Felicia, I love your gown.
FELICIA Likewise, Kat. The renovations are amazing and what a hostess. Tell me your secret?
She puts a hand to the side of her mouth.
KAT Find a good caterer.
Graham indicates to Roger with a diplomatic smile.
GRAHAM New guy held up well on the program.
KAT My husband’s a fighter when he needs to be. But we’re neighbors now and it’s just politics. Nothing’s personal.
Not that anyone believes that. Kat excuses herself and they watch her rejoin Roger’s side. Graham keeps his eyes peeled on them.
GRAHAM Watching them is like some weird pandrogeny thing, where the couple starts to look like each other.
He laughs at his own joke. Felicia knocks back her drink. Graham notices.
GRAHAM (CONT'D) Take it easy, tonight.
Felicia holds up her hand, swallows hard.
FELICIA Oh please, give it a rest.
Felicia picks up another drink and walks away.
CUT TO:
ACROSS THE ROOM -- Hadley emerges, swinging out of the caterer’s kitchen with a bottle of grey goose tucked under his black morning coat.
TAVIS Were you planning on pounding that in the middle of the room?
He almost runs into Tavis and Nick.
HADLEY No, but I like where you’re going with that. It’s for later. We can’t show up at Schuyler’s empty handed.
Nick tries to follow.
TAVIS (to Nick) Schuyler Stone.
HADLEY The Veep’s daughter is in my class at Wesley. Where Tavis is going in the fall. The Nation’s most powerful prep school.
Nick is amused.
NICK You don’t sound like you’re being ironic.
SWISH PAN:
TAVIS He’s not.
Kat appears.
KAT There you are. Boys, I need to steal Tavis.
She takes Tavis by the hand and leads her away.
HADLEY (to Nick) And so it begins. The Duncans. America’s next top political family.
Hadley slings his arm over Nick.
HADLEY (CONT'D) Dynasties usually don’t last past three generations.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - VERANDA - NIGHT
The trees are washed in light. It’s magical. There’s a jazz band under the big high-peaked pole white tents. Inside, guests dine at round tables with heat lamps and oversized flower arrangements. Kat taps a glass of champagne and addresses the crowd.
KAT Everyone. Welcome to our home. The first of many evenings we hope to share with you in Washington.
Guests by the pool stop and take pause.
KAT (CONT'D) I am so proud of my husband, Senator Roger Duncan. He’s a person of extraordinary integrity and is going to do great things on the Hill.
Roger smiles modestly.
ROGER Thank you, Kat.
He glances down, finds his words.
ROGER (CONT'D) You know, my wife is my biggest fan and sometimes I’m my own worst enemy.
There are chuckles.
ROGER (CONT'D) We’re looking forward to getting to know all of you. Being in Washington is a chance, it’s an opportunity...
Cracks start to show. It’s not the Roger we’re used to. Roger notices Nick in the crowd. He smiles at him, hopeful.
ROGER (CONT'D) To make a difference. And, at the end of the day that’s why we do this, right?
Suddenly, Roger becomes hyper-aware of himself. Still, his smile is working overtime. Kat senses something’s up. Quickly covers for him.
KAT And he will. We’re so happy to meet our neighbors tonight and be a part of each other’s lives. D.C. has always been my home.
She holds her glass up.
KAT (CONT'D) And, it’s great to be back.
Everyone APPLAUDS. Roger stands like a deer in headlights. Nick watches THE DUNCANS together, a look that could be envy. Hadley steps up, realizes his fascination.
HADLEY See, Mrs. Duncan is the classic Machiavellian architect. Think the Corleones are dangerous? Wait til’ you meet her family.
Nick raises an eyebrow.
NICK Thought they ran a law firm.
Hadley nods.
HADLEY One that’s got a lot of snakes under the rocks. That family is well-versed in the dark arts of politics.
BACK ON GRAHAM & FELICIA
Felicia takes another champagne glass from the bar. But Graham appears and removes it from her hand.
GRAHAM I think it’s time to take a break.
Felicia is now drunk.
FELICIA I’m sorry, am I embarrassing you, Graham?
Across the way, Kat watches hawk-eyed. Hadley leaves Nick’s side and goes up to Tavis. He’s mortified.
HADLEY Do me a favor? Get me out of here. She’s been like this all summer long.
Tavis nods. ANGLE on Roger who leaves the center of the storm and heads over to Nick.
ROGER Was that what you would call an epic fail?
Nick holds his gaze.
NICK No, it was genuine. A good speech.
Roger is happy to hear. They move away from the crowd together. Roger stands beside Nick.
ROGER You know, you do all this work to get here then you realize it’s not what you thought. Doesn’t quite match what you had in mind. They like you, but it’s not always for the right reasons.
NICK Maybe, you should stop caring so much whether people like you or not and focus on being an effective Senator.
Roger nods.
ROGER Point taken. I appreciate your honesty, Nick.
NICK It’s how I was raised.
ROGER Right. Your family was a big part of my life.
Nick looks at him.
NICK But they haven’t been for some time, Senator. You don’t have to save face for me.
Nick steps off, Roger watches him go with regret. ANGLE on Felicia who hip checks a round table and spills her drink. Kat quickly goes up to Graham.
KAT Graham, she needs to leave. Now.
GRAHAM I know.
He shares her sentiment. Felicia stumbles, catches this exchange. She laughs out loud then sneers.
FELICIA Oh, so the kitty Kat finally shows her claws. I know all about you Kat.
Felicia makes a snob face.
FELICIA (CONT'D) The Spencers. Now, the Duncans. This party is full of phonies! And, you’re the biggest!
Everyone takes notice. Graham grabs her wrist.
GRAHAM Go home. Take an Ambien.
FELICIA This again? Really Graham?
His voice drops to a whisper.
GRAHAM This was your last chance.
She throws her glass and smashes it against an ivory covered trellis.
FELICIA Don’t you dare threaten me!
Kat walks back to Roger, takes his hand as the party watches Graham lead Felicia away in shame.
KAT (to Roger) You can lose it privately or you can loose it publicly.
Tavis finds Nick.
TAVIS Let’s go.
NICK Where?
TAVIS Need a change of venue.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD STREET - A SHORT TIME LATER
Hadley takes a swig of the bottle he’s been transporting under his coat. Nick and Tavis follow closely behind him.
HADLEY My parents used to be respectable. Her father was an ambassador. His father was a newsman. Now, he’s the most HATED man in media and she’s on her way to twelve steps.
Tavis links arms with him.
TAVIS Hadley, every family has problems. I mean, look at me, I’m an afterthought for my parents.
Their eyes move ahead to:
EXT. EMBASSY - NIGHT
Where a few Secret Service guards hang around outside. Nick looks at them oddly.
NICK Does every party around here come with Secret Service detail?
TAVIS Pretty much.
Nick bemused, follows Tavis and Hadley past security. We hear b.g laughter and music coming from above.
EXT. EMBASSY ROOF - CONTINUOUS
They step off an elevator onto a rooftop terrace with Monument views. TEENAGERS everywhere. PARENTS nowhere to be found.
This is the inner circle of BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS and holding court is SCHUYLER STONE (16). Stylish stunner. She pops her eyes and heads over to them.
TAVIS Hey Schuy.
They hug and kiss.
SCHUYLER Tavis, I need to see your face!
Schuyler makes a “you’re trouble but I like you” look at Hadley and smiles.
SCUYLER Hadley...
She swings her finger like a pendulum at Nick. He captures her attention.
SCHUYLER (to Tavis) Who is he? And is there more? If so, where can I find them?
TAVIS Friend of the family. (calls out) Nick, this is Schuyler.
Nick steps over, waves. She smiles.
SCHUYLER Welcome, Nick.
She gets close to Tavis. Schuyler’s eyes get big, bites her lower lip.
SCHUYLER (CONT'D) I’m officially obsessed.
TAVIS ‘Natch. He’s a catch.
Schuyler takes Tavis by the hand.
SCHUYLER Come on guys, get off the lame train. Let’s go get black out.
The girls walk away. Hadley holds Nick back, indicates Schuyler.
HADLEY She’ll be wasted in fifteen minutes then go cry and throw up. Wind up passed out in the bathroom.
Hadley resumes.
HADLEY (CONT'D) (off the crowd) The chosen ones.
Nick takes in the Princelings of Washington, where everybody’s parents are somebody. These kids have been prepping for the world stage since birth.
HADLEY (CONT'D) And if they play their cards right the future leaders of the free world.
There are a handful of guys in button downs and backwards hats playing beer pong.
HADLEY (CONT'D) Start with the dude bros over there. Wheeler making the shot, his Dad’s the CIA director.
ON WHEELER (17), tall and broad, a bottle of IPA and a cigar in his hands, catches sight of Nick. Instantly territorial.
WHEELER Who’s that dude? Looks sus.
No one knows. RESUME - ON NICK & HADLEY.
HADLEY Over there is the Supreme Court Chief Justice’s son Cyrus teaching that freshman how to dougie for her TikTok Millennial Dance Challenge.
On, CYRUS BULLARD, 17, swaggy, next to a FRESHMAN GIRL going through the motions.
HADLEY (CONT'D) And of course, there’s Schuyler who you’ve met. Doing her best to not make embarrassing headlines for her “first in line to the presidency” mom but failing miserably.
Schuyler is now giving a guy a lap dance beside a couple making out in a chair. Nick looks around.
NICK Parties where I’m from usually begin and end with a keg in the back of a pick-up parked in a field until the cops break it up. So, definitely a different crowd.
HADLEY Think of Wes as the perfect springboard to world domination. It’s the Power School. And we’ve got the most plugged-in PTA.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - LATER
The guests have begun to wither from the house.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - VERANDA - LATER
Roger is sitting on the steps outside. Kat walks up from behind, places a hand on his shoulder and sits down next to him, legs turned in.
KAT My mother used to fill this place up with strangers because the truth was my parents couldn’t stand each other.
ROGER That’ll never be us. But, tonight? Jeez, that wasn’t my best.
KAT It was well played. Roger Duncan doesn’t let anyone see him sweat.
Roger laughs.
ROGER My dad was tough, he was a hammer. Made it look easy. The man did a lot of great things in his life but also some not so great things. I just wanted to be better.
KAT You are better, Roger. The world has gotten a lot more judgers and a lot less doers. Stop trying to atone for his sins.
ROGER I just don’t want to disappoint you.
KAT You won’t. I know you won’t. You’re too smart for that.
OFF KAT -- almost as if it’s a warning...
EXT. EMBASSY ROOF - LATER
Hadley’s the most popular guy in the room and he’s working it. Nick feels awkward. He catches Tavis’s eye. She starts towards him.
TAVIS Nick, let’s get a picture.
Tavis indicates the PHOTO BOOTH that Schuyler pulls Wheeler out of by his tie. Schuyler removes the photo strip from it’s dispenser, looks at the photo and mouths, “Oh my god.” Embarrassed but not really.
SCHUYLER This could be you.
She giggles. Schuyler shows Tavis the picture. Tavis is disturbed.
CUT TO:
INSIDE - PHOTO BOOTH
Tavis gives the hang loose sign next to Nick. After the FLASH SNAPS, she studies him.
TAVIS What?
NICK I didn’t say anything...
Tavis laughs.
TAVIS You’re nice, Nick. You’re such a nice guy.
Unsure how to proceed.
NICK I’m not really.
Tavis moves closer, locks eyes. He moves away.
TAVIS Okay, I can take a hint.
NICK Tavis, it’s not that I don’t think you’re a beautiful girl. You’re just not my type.
He gets up. Tavis is taken aback.
EXT. EMBASSY ROOF - CONTINUOUS
They come out together. Nick walks off. Schuyler who was waiting outside, goes over to Tavis.
SCHUYLER No, bueno?
TAVIS Iced me.
Tavis shrugs.
SCHUYLER Think he’s gay?
TAVIS I’m not drawing any conclusions.
Tavis watches as Nick slips away.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD STREET - NIGHT
Nick wanders out onto the sidewalk, leaving the political progeny behind. He’s mixed up, questioning everything. He looks back, burning inside.
Nick snaps. A flash of anger in his eyes. Fists clench. He keeps walking, right into the street...
CUT TO:
REVERSE ANGLE -- POV OF A BLACK RANGE ROVER
Nick appears through the headlights. He looks up, terrified. Snaps back to life.
GRAHAM Jesus Christ!
REVEAL -- GRAHAM is driving. He grabs the wheel and SLAMS on the breaks. The RANGE ROVER lurches to a halt in front of Nick. Their eyes lock.
The male Production Assistant (who we saw at the taping) rises up into view. He’s freaked out and shirtless. Graham is even more so.
CUT TO:
REVERSE POV -- Nick has vanished from view.
ON NICK -- in full sprint mode, running through a small triangular park, panicked.
NATALIE I saw that! You almost got yourself killed.
He looks up at Natalie standing on the SPANISH STEPS perched over the neighborhood alight by street lamps. Incognito in a thrift shop hoodie and skinny jeans.
NATALIE (CONT'D) Are you okay?
NICK I’m not. But the car had nothing to do with it.
She smiles.
NATALIE I know just how you feel.
Nick smiles back, now a little less alone. Something about her. She’s not like the others.
SPANISH STEPS
They continue walking up the steps, which lead to a perch that provides a stunning view of the city.
NATALIE So, you’re staying with the Duncans?
Nick follows her. She draws you.
NICK Was.
NATALIE I live next door. But my family wasn’t on the guest list.
NICK Why’s that?
She looks around as they keep moving onto another NEIGHBORHOOD STREET.
NATALIE Because this neighborhood takes itself way too seriously. They’ve got to control their outside lives because what’s on the inside is chaos.
Nick nods, kind of gets it.
NICK What do you know about the Duncans?
NATALIE Not much. But I know that DC is a place that changes people and usually not for the better. Can’t always tell who the bad ones are and who the good ones are.
NICK I’m starting to feel like one of the bad ones.
NATALIE Guess we have that in common.
NICK Maybe, we’re just trying to figure out which fits best.
NATALIE Maybe. But these people play by a different set of rules. So, be careful.
Natalie stares ahead to the now darkened DUNCAN HOME coming into shot.
NATALIE (CONT'D) Who are you anyway?
Nick exhales, been a long night.
NICK Well, it’s kind of a funny story.
NATALIE I’d love to hear it one day. Stop by next time you’re around.
NICK Probably won’t be back.
NATALIE That’s too bad.
She takes off towards the FROST HOME. Off Nick, completely enchanted by her.
EXT. KALORAMA - CUL DE SAC - NIGHT
The camera finds Hadley who sees this exchange between Nick and Natalie. He stands at the side of his house and gazes across the street with contempt.
INT. COOK HOME - MASTER BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Hadley notices the light on inside and finds Felicia conked out on the bed spread. Her jewelry is scattered on the night stand by a shattered glass.
He goes over to his mother in bed and pulls a blanket over her then leaves.
INT. HADLEY’S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Hadley slams the door behind him. He puts his hands up to the sides of his head, pushing his hair back. Eyes dart across the room. Everything in order. Everything in place.
Sees, the ladder book-shelf and yanks it from the wall. Then, launches it across the room. Roars.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTER HALL - NIGHT
Nick walks into a dark house. The lamp light flicks on. Roger is sitting nearby. For most of his life he’s been the boy that would be king. Now, that promise is unclear.
ROGER I’m glad you’re here. What I did. It’s nothing to be proud of, I know that Nick.
Nick pauses.
NICK Listen, about what I said. Just forget it. I’m gonna go. Tonight.
ROGER You don’t have to. You were right. When you tell the truth you get in trouble. But I’m going to.
NICK You always had that choice.
ROGER Nick, I’ve lived my life under a cloud with this for years.
Roger becomes uncomfortable.
NICK Before I knew, I wanted to be just like you. Being a Duncan set you up for success. Years trading on your father’s name. That man put politics before anything else and you’re no different.
With a defiant conviction.
NICK (CONT'D) Sonoma. His vineyard. He was gone but they took care of you. They were your family...
EXT. DUNCAN WINERY - SONOMA VALLEY - NIGHT
A brush of moonlight. TWO FIGURES emerge from behind a stack of barrels into the VINEYARDS.
NICK (O.S.) My uncle was your best friend and you fell in love with his sister.
Their faces silhouetted in the night. They are laughing. Running, hand in hand. Until, he pulls her to the ground. They kiss. YOUNG ROGER sings, a little drunk.
YOUNG ROGER Maria, I just kissed a girl named Maria...
He is on top of MARIA TORRES (20). She rolls her eyes and pushes him away. Gorgeous.
MARIA Do you love me?
Maria rises to her feet and sprints off. Roger calls after her, he can’t get enough of this girl.
YOUNG ROGER I’ve always loved you!
He chases her down.
YOUNG ROGER (CONT'D) I’ll never love anyone as much as I love you.
She stops, turns back to face him. They kiss again. He pulls her close, lifts up her legs around his waist and takes her against the WINE BARRELS.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTER HALL - CONTINUOUS
Nick stares at him, heartbroken. Despite his maturity, he’s still just a kid.
NICK You made her promises. When you finished grad school you’d be ready. But that was a lie, wasn’t it? She didn’t know about Kat. You left her. My mother. And never acknowledged your son.
Roger is ashamed.
ROGER I didn’t forget, Nick.
NICK Her family protected your secret. Even after her death. Never once broke a lifetime of silence.
ROGER Nick, not a day has gone by when I don’t think about you.
NICK Right.
Nick shakes his head.
NICK (CONT'D) You were always looking for a family. Now, you have the Spencers. The ultimate operators. I’m not an asset to this image. Politicians aren’t supposed to have problems. Your life has been carefully planned. I’m your big slip up.
ROGER Nick, I didn’t do the right thing.
NICK And you should have to live with that. My whole life. I’m the secret. You know, a piece of me wanted to be a part of your world.
After a moment.
NICK (CONT'D) But not anymore.
INT. FIRST FLOOR HALLWAY - REVERSE REVEAL
Kat steps closer towards the light, hidden from sight.
INT. CENTER HALL - CONTINUOUS
Nick stares hard at his father.
NICK If you really want to change the world. You’d start by owning up to your mistakes. I would vote for that guy.
Kat makes herself known. She looks at Nick coolly.
KAT Blackmailing my husband isn’t in your best interest, Nick.
She cocks her eyebrow, arms crossed. Stares daggers at him. Nick faces her.
KAT (CONT'D) You think I didn’t know? If there’s one thing my husband and I can count on, it’s each other.
NICK That’s not why I came here.
He returns his gaze at Roger.
NICK (CONT'D) I just wanted to know you...
Simultaneously, the front door slowly opens. On the other side, Tavis takes pause. Hears Nick. Senses something’s off.
NICK (CONT'D) To know who my Dad is.
She steps in from the foyer, looks at her family. Deer in headlights. Feels betrayed. Nick is instantly guilt-ridden.
NICK (CONT'D) (to Tavis) I’m sorry.
On Tavis, full of questions.
TAVIS (to Roger) He’s your son?
Tavis turns her attention to Nick then at Roger.
ROGER Tavis, this isn’t how I wanted you to find out.
As Nick leaves the room.
TAVIS You lied to us.
ROGER I was protecting you from the information.
Tavis shakes her head. Unmoved.
TAVIS No. You’re a liar.
Tavis walks away. Kat turns to Roger. She feels completely betrayed. Without warning, Kat slaps him across the face.
KAT (icily) How could you keep that from me, Roger? This is Washington. They ruin people for sport!
OFF ROGER... shamed.
EXT. KALORAMA, CUL DE SAC - NIGHT
A cab pulls up to the DUNCAN HOME. Nick gets into it.
INT. TAVIS’ BEDROOM - SAME
Tavis pushes back the curtain and sees the TAXI CAB pulling away. The truth sinking in. This stranger is her brother.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - MASTER BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Kat removes her earrings at a vanity table. Catches Roger’s reflection in the mirror from the bathroom and walks off.
INT. TAVIS’ BEDROOM - MINUTES LATER
The door is open. Kat moves inside but Tavis is nowhere to be found. Kat dances her eyes across the room. She steps forward to the window. A car is leaving the driveway.
She stares down at a vintage tin on the windowsill (Hadley’s gift). Opens it. Inside are several tightly rolled joints.
I.E. TAXI CAB - TRAVELING
From the backseat, Nick watches this world pass him by. The majesty of Washington, DC and all it’s promise. A trace of regret flashes across his face.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - MASTER BATH - CONTINUOUS
Kat sits legs-crossed on the edge of the bath tub in a long white robe, emotionally drained. She strikes a match and lights the joint at her lips. Takes a long drag, looks up at the ceiling and exhales.
INT. UNION STATION - NIGHT
Returning to where we first met him, Nick walks the long halls of a near empty station. It’s after midnight and he’s very much alone.
He moves through the concourse towards the train platform. His eyes check the DIGITAL DISPLAY BOARD showing departure times for REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT.
TAVIS (O.S.) Nick, wait!
He looks over, sees Tavis headed towards him. For a moment, they stand there without a word. Then, finally:
TAVIS (CONT'D) That was an awkward goodbye.
They share a smile.
NICK It was.
TAVIS You definitely made some ripples tonight.
NICK Listen, I don’t want you to think I’m a bad guy --
She tears up.
TAVIS -- I know you’re not. That was rough. That was terrible. It’s not fun when you realize your family’s the next scandal. About to get reduced to a trending topic.
NICK I wasn’t going to tell anyone.
TAVIS It’ll come out eventually. It always does. But that’s beside the point. Godson. Real son. I found out tonight I have a brother.
NICK We can keep in touch.
TAVIS You don’t have to go. I don’t want you to go. I want to get to know you. I want you to stay.
This makes Nick smile.
EXT. UNION STATION - NIGHT
A car waits outside COLUMBUS CIRCLE. Roger stands next to the driver’s side. He narrows his eyes at Nick walking beside Tavis towards the car. It’s uncomfortable for them. He looks at both of his children.
ROGER What can I do to make this right?
Tavis steps forward.
TAVIS Be decent.
For the first time, he realizes he’s disappointed her and is determined to make it right.
She goes around to the other side of the car and gets into the passenger side. He looks at Nick, grateful.
ROGER (to Nick) Thank you, for giving me another chance.
NICK Yeah, well this was all new to me. Guess I didn’t really think it through.
ROGER Then let’s start over.
Nick nods. Roger smiles back. Together, they get inside.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - CENTER HALL - NIGHT
Kat steps into the light. Suddenly, there is a sound of breaking glass. An ALARM SETS OFF! Her blood runs cold.
KAT Roger?!
CUT TO:
Kat descends the winding staircase. She picks up a fireplace poker beside the library. KAT’S POV -- the patio doors are wide open.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - CONTINUOUS
A FIGURE spirits away in a hooded sweatshirt and gloves through the rhododendrons into the night.
EXT. KALORAMA - CUL DE SAC - LATER
Roger pulls the car into the driveway. There are police cars outside with their lights on. A look of concern grows on his face. Nick and Tavis stare ahead in their seats.
INT. FROST HOME - NATALIE’S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Natalie pulls the hood back from her sweat shirt. Removes a pair of gloves. Undoes the tie in her hair. Shakes it out. Wrapped in a cloth is a FLASH DRIVE she places on the bed.
Beside it appears to be a SCRAPBOOK. She sits down and turns back the pages. There are several clippings. On the very first page is a photograph of Natalie with a YOUNG MAN. She flips past it to find a WASHINGTON POST article.
Natalie traces across the fine print, What Happened to ADAM FROST? Promising Young Lawyer of Spencer, Wilde & Associates - disappears.
NATALIE I won’t stop until I find out what happened to you...
The picture of ADAM FROST is the same person in the first photograph. This is her missing brother.
EXT. POTOMAC RIVER - SUNRISE
Where we find Roger on a stand-up paddle board off the banks of the Potomac. Wears a Stanford t-shirt. Waterproof Fitbit on his wrist.
The LINCOLN MEMORIAL as our back drop. Georgetown crew team rows in long sculls nearby. It’s picture perfect.
Roger keeps paddling with faster and harder strokes. This brand new drive to meet those great expectations that have been set before him.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - MASTER BEDROOM - LATER THAT MORNING
In the mirror, Roger combs back his wet hair and straightens his tie on a white button-down shirt. He stands with his back to Kat at the fire place mantel.
KAT My mother hasn’t updated security since the first Bush was in office. They’re going to put in a whole new system.
Kat is acting as if nothing happened.
ROGER Where do we go from here?
He locks eyes with her, ashamed. Kat considers his statement.
KAT We’re going to forget about this. Nicholas is a child who wanted to know his father.
ROGER I never wanted to keep it from you.
KAT You’re no longer a private citizen, Roger. What I do know now is that we have an imperfect marriage. But I’ve invested too much of myself to stop believing in you.
He turns to Kat and kisses her.
ROGER I’ll make this up to you. I’ll do better. That’s a promise.
She backs away.
KAT No, that’s smart politics. As far as the neighbors are concerned, we’re offering a fresh start to an underprivileged youth with loose ties to your family. (then) The press will eat that up. Learn to play the game, Roger.
Kat smiles, leaves the room. Off Roger, unsettled.
INT. DUNCAN HOME - KITCHEN - DAY
Kat continues downstairs. She sees Nick at the table, he has made coffee. He stands up from the table.
NICK I know this wasn’t the best way of going about things.
She death-glares back at him.
KAT (calmly) No it wasn’t. I’m sorry for what you’ve been through Nicholas. You can be a part of this family but I won’t let you threaten it, again.
Nick nods.
NICK Of course.
KAT I’ve forgiven my husband. Despite his mistakes he’s a good man. But I was wrong about you. You know what you’re doing. And I don’t like being wrong.
Kat passes him.
NICK You can trust me.
She turns back.
KAT A wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf. And lying? That’s in your DNA.
Kat grins like a smiling cobra. OFF NICK’S uneasiness...
INT. COOK HOME - DAY
DOORBELL RINGS. Hadley moves through the first floor. Answers it. Awaiting him is a PROCESS SERVER on the front step.
PROCESS SERVER Is Mrs. Cook at home?
Hadley gives him an odd stare.
HADLEY What’s this about?
Felicia looks down from the top of the stairs.
FELICIA Honey, who is that?
HADLEY It’s nothing.
Felicia walks downstairs and joins him.
PROCESS SERVER Mrs. Cook?
FELICIA Yes. This is she.
PROCESS SERVER You’re being served.
He hands over an envelope and walks away. Felicia takes the papers and opens the envelope. Reads. She wells up.
Hadley keeps it together, hearing the sound of his father’s voice in the other room. Looks over at the TV In the kitchen.
ON SCREEN.
A MORNING SHOW is playing. FEMALE HOST sits beside Graham.
FEMALE HOST The name of the book is Cooked. Now Graham, you’ve earned a reputation for getting under a lot of politicians’ skins. Your criticisms of Senator Duncan have been pretty harsh.
GRAHAM Duncan is a flash fad. I’m simply holding these politicians accountable.
FEMALE HOST A lot of folks are saying this is all fuel for a likely run in the next election cycle.
Graham shakes his head.
GRAHAM That’s a bit presumptuous.
BACK TO SCENE:
Hadley stares with contempt at the television.
EXT. DUNCAN HOME - VERANDA - DAY
There is a ping pong table set up outside. Nick and Tavis each pick up a paddle and start playing.
TAVIS This is the only caveat for living here. You have to indulge my ping- pong obsession.
NICK That’s fair.
TAVIS Any places in DC you want to check out before we get our asses kicked at the Wesley School?
NICK I was thinking the Smithsonian.
Tavis smiles, charmed by the mention.
TAVIS Alright. Might as well spend some quality time with the brother I never knew I had.
The CAMERA begins pulling back...
EXT. FROST HOME - REVERSE REVEAL
Natalie sees Nick and Tavis through the rhododendrons of her backyard. Shocked by the stunning revelation.
EXT. KALORAMA, CUL DE SAC - DAY
And we RISE above the neighborhood, protected and insulated from the rest of the District. A place for better or for worse is connected by each family’s interwoven lives. This is DC and the stakes don’t get any higher.
EXT. SPENCER, WILDE & ASSOCIATES - ESTABLISHING
In a black cape and dark sunglasses, Kat leaves her LEXUS SUV at the valet. Ahead is an old-line white-shoe firm. Political access for an exuberant fee. D.C.’s ultimate consigliere.
INT. SWA OFFICES - MINUTES LATER
On her headset, Kat breezes past the main reception desk. A RECEPTIONIST stands to address her.
RECEPTIONIST Mrs. Duncan, your brother Elliot called to say he’ll be working outside the office today.
She continues through the workstations.
KAT What else is new.
Kat arrives at an office, a name plate next to her door reads Katherine Spencer, Managing Partner.
INT. KAT’S OFFICE - DAY
Kat removes her suit jacket and sits back at her desk with her legs crossed.
KAT (on the phone) Elliot, there were over a hundred client files with political consequences stolen.
She pauses.
KAT (CONT'D) I want to know everything. Everything you haven’t been telling me while I was heading up the San Francisco office. It’s time you come clean about what you’ve done. Our futures depend on it now.
Kat gets up and looks out the window at the cityscape.
EXT. SENATE - DAY
FOLLOW Roger as he hauls ass with his STAFFERS past a PORTRAIT GALLERY OF SENATORS.
ROGER We need to start addressing the problems head on.
An AIDE hands him a coffee. He’s projecting himself like the perfect statesman once more.
ROGER (CONT'D) I want every constituent e-mail and letter responded to. No excuses. We’re going to follow through on everything we’ve laid out.
This irresistible force at the precipice of a new beginning. The winds of change blowing in Washington once again. Roger leaves his staff and exits into the Senate Chamber. The most exclusive club in the world. And so, the makings of a new Camelot begins.
BOOM TO:
EXT. WASHINGTON, DC - ESTABLISHING
SOARING FAST across CAPITOL HILL.
SMASH TO BLACK:
END OF SHOW
You’ve reached the end of the available work.
